Provider Perspectives: Hydration Vital for Good Health

As the heat begins to peak here in the upper Midwest, staying hydrated is more important than ever. Water is essential for nearly every function in your body, from regulating temperature to keeping your organs functioning properly. Yet, many people don’t drink enough water daily, increasing their risk of dehydration, fatigue, and other health concerns.

“Even mild dehydration can cause headaches, dizziness, and sluggishness,” says Michelle Jans, PA-C, Story Medical Clinic—Maxwell. “It’s important to stay ahead of your hydration needs, especially during the hot summer months.”

Why Hydration Matters

Water is the foundation of good health. Drinking enough water daily helps to:

  • Maintain body temperature
  • Support digestion and prevent constipation
  • Improve circulation and joint lubrication
  • Enhance energy levels and brain function
  • Flush out toxins and support kidney function

“Your body is constantly losing water through sweat, breathing, and even digestion,” Jans says. “Replenishing that water is key to keeping everything running smoothly.”

Signs of Dehydration

Not drinking enough water can lead to dehydration, which can range from mild to severe. Common signs include:

  • Dry mouth or skin
  • Dark-colored urine
  • Dizziness or headaches
  • Muscle cramps
  • Fatigue or confusion

“If you’re feeling thirsty, you’re already slightly dehydrated,” says Jans. “Try to sip water throughout the day rather than waiting until you feel parched.”

How Much Water Do You Need?

A common guideline is to drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day—but in the summer heat or when exercising, your needs may be higher. A good rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight in ounces each day.

Tips to Stay Hydrated:

  • Carry a reusable water bottle and sip throughout the day
  • Eat water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges
  • Set reminders on your phone to drink water regularly
  • Limit caffeinated and sugary drinks, which can lead to dehydration
