Men’s Health Matters: Preventive Screenings Every Man Should Know About

June is Men’s Health Month, a time to raise awareness about the importance of preventive care and early detection of health issues that affect men. Putting off routine check-ups and screenings can be easy, but taking the proactive approach can lead to a longer, healthier life.

“Men often wait until something is wrong before seeing a provider, but preventive screenings can catch issues early—when they’re easiest to treat,” says Shane Higgins, PA-C, Story Medical Clinic—Nevada. “By staying on top of regular check-ups, men can significantly lower their risk of serious health problems”.

Key Screenings for Men’s Health

  • Blood Pressure Check: High blood pressure is often called the “silent killer” because it may not show symptoms but can lead to heart disease and stroke. Adults should have their blood pressure checked at least once a year.
  • Cholesterol Test: High cholesterol increases the risk of heart disease. Men should begin cholesterol screenings at age 35 (or earlier if they have risk factors like obesity, smoking, or diabetes).
  • Diabetes Screening: Type 2 diabetes can develop gradually and go unnoticed. A simple blood test can determine if you’re at risk. Men with high blood pressure, family history, or obesity should get tested regularly.
  • Colorectal Cancer Screening: Colon cancer is one of the most preventable cancers with early detection. Screenings (such as a colonoscopy) should start at age 45, or earlier if there’s a family history of colorectal cancer.
  • Prostate Cancer Screening: Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men. “Starting at age 50, men should discuss prostate screenings with their provider, or earlier if they have a family history,” Higgins says.
  • Testicular Cancer Self-Check: Testicular cancer is most common in younger men (ages 15-35). A monthly self-exam can help detect any unusual lumps or changes that should be checked by a provider.

Healthy Habits for a Stronger Future

Beyond screenings, lifestyle choices play a crucial role in men’s health. Maintaining a healthy diet, staying physically active, quitting smoking, managing stress, and getting enough sleep all contribute to overall well-being.

“Preventive care is more than just screenings—it’s about making daily choices that improve health and longevity,” Higgins says. “Small changes like exercising regularly, cutting back on processed foods, and managing stress can make a big impact.”
