Audra Poterucha, DO, and Rachel Frederick, PA-C, Family Practice providers at Story Medical Clinic in Nevada, are hosting a free, in-person workshop for parents on caring for children during respiratory illness season. The workshop is set for 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 22 and will be held in the Hertz Conference Center at Story Medical, 640 S. 19th Street in Nevada.
In-person space is limited as social distancing measures will be in place. To reserve a spot in-person or learn more about attending via Zoom, call (515) 382-7700.
“As expected, we have been receiving a lot of questions from parents on how to keep their kids safe and healthy as we continue to deal with the pandemic and as respiratory illness season begins,” Frederick says. “This workshop will offer an open forum for parents to ask questions, and learn more about how they can care for their children at home and when it is time to call their provider.”
While the nation’s focus has understandably been on the spread of COVID-19, the flu and other respiratory illnesses affect millions of school-aged children each year and can cause significant illness. Frederick says empowering parents with information can help them to manage flu season and the pandemic.
“There are a number of steps that parents can take to limit exposure to respiratory diseases like the flu and COVID,” Poterucha says. “There has been a lot of information shared about protecting children from COVID, and those are also great strategies for the respiratory illnesses. Things like wearing a face covering, washing hands regularly, and getting the proper amount of sleep are wonderful for the immune system. And when it comes to the flu, you can give your child an extra boost of protection by getting them the annual flu shot.”
Story Medical has received its seasonal allotment of the flu vaccine. Children and adults can schedule an appointment to get the shot in Nevada or Maxwell, or attend a walk-in clinic during October from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays or from 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturdays.
To schedule a flu shot, call (515) 382-5413 for the Nevada Clinic or (515) 387-8815 for the Maxwell Clinic.
