COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution at Story Medical
UPDATE: March 3, 2021
Story Medical continues to schedule COVID 19 vaccine appointments for those 65+.
PLEASE NOTE: All vaccine requests need to be done electronically through our online portal at https://www.storymedical.org/about-us/queue.
Please DO NOT call to request an appointment. It is important that you only enter your name in the online portal once as having multiple entries slows the scheduling process.
UPDATE: February 9, 2021
Story Medical has received a portion of the 1,075 doses of vaccine distributed by Story County Public Health for the week of February 8. We continue to reach out to our patients ages 65+ to schedule an appointment. If you are not a Story Medical Clinic patient but are 65+, you can enter your name in our queue by clicking this link: https://www.storymedical.org/about-us/queue. Someone from Story Medical will call you when a vaccine is available.
UPDATE: January 29, 2021
Phase 1B Priority List
The State of Iowa's COVID-19 vaccination program Phase 1B includes individuals 65 years of age or older.
If you are 65 years of age or older and an established patient of Story Medical you will receive a call to schedule your vaccination. We are calling individuals that meet this criteria starting with the oldest and working our way down the list as vaccine supply is made available to us by Public Health.
If you are 65 years of age or older and not an established patient of Story Medical but would like to be included in our priority queue, please click the button below to access our queue form.
WE ARE NOT ACCEPTING PHONE CALLS FOR VACCINE APPOINTMENTS AT THIS TIME.
UPDATE: January 26, 2021
Late last week, the State of Iowa announced that anyone age 65 or older will become eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine on Feb. 1, 2021. Story Medical is excited to start vaccinating patients soon, and we are busy finalizing operational plans. Here’s what you can expect from us:
- Based on state and local public health guidelines, if you identify as an eligible individual based on age, we will notify you via phone or through MyUnityPoint when you are eligible to call and schedule an appointment. At this time, please refrain from reaching out to the clinics as we will be contacting our eligible patients.
- If you identify as an eligible individual based on your place of employment or occupation, we encourage you to closely monitor communication from your local public health department. We will continue to partner with local public health departments on the best strategies to vaccinate and broadly communicate to these groups of individuals.
- We expect COVID-19 vaccines to be widely available to the general public later in 2021. Please note that community members aren't able to sign up for the vaccine in advance at this time.
In the meantime, we encourage you to:
- Wear a face covering, social distance and wash your hands frequently in order to help reduce your risk of COVID-19.
- Learn about the COVID-19 vaccine from fact-based sources, such as the FDA and CDC.
- Contact your health care provider if you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19.
UPDATE: January 25, 2021
Story Medical Clinic is a participant in the State of Iowa’s COVID-19 Vaccination Provider Program. As such, the State manages how much vaccine supply we will receive, who can be vaccinated, and when.
Vaccine Availability at Story Medical Clinic
The vaccine is only available for Phase 1A populations (healthcare workers and long-term care facility residents) in Iowa at this time. Story Medical Clinic continues to wait for direction from the Iowa Department of Public Health and county public health departments to begin administering the COVID-19 vaccine to the next priority population.
Phase 1B Details
Governor Kim Reynolds provided guidance on updates to the State of Iowa’s plan for Phase 1B of the COVID-19 vaccination program on January 21, 2021. This update made all individuals age 65 and older part of the Phase 1B roll-out. Additionally, the revised Phase 1B also includes priority tiers for individuals from populations vulnerable to high risk of exposure or severity of illness from COVID-19. Complete information on these updates is provided by the Iowa Department of Public Health. Please direct questions about your individual eligibility in priority tiers to your county public health department.
Phase 1B Vaccination Roll-out
The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) plans to begin vaccine distribution to county public health departments February 1, 2021. The county public health departments will determine how many doses Story Medical Clinic receives each week. We are prepared to begin offering the vaccine as soon as we receive our supply. Please note, however, that we anticipate the supply to be extremely limited in the early days and weeks of the Phase 1B roll-out.
Scheduling a Vaccine Appointment
Story Medical Clinic is not currently scheduling appointments but will begin scheduling once we have confirmation of how many doses we will be receiving. To ensure we can continue to care for our patients, please do not call our clinic locations at this time to inquire about the vaccine. We ask that you watch our website at storymedical.org/vaccine or our social media channels for specifics when we are ready to schedule appointments. We anticipate having another update before February 1, 2021.
UPDATE: January 8, 2021
We understand that many in our communities are anxious to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. While other states have initiated plans to begin vaccination of the general public, in Iowa we have not. At Story Medical, our team is working closely with state and county officials in charge of vaccine distribution. We anticipate the general public will have access to the vaccine in early spring but that will depend on the vaccine allocations Iowa receives from the federal government.
Story Medical Clinics will provide the vaccine to our community members. When we receive allotments intended for the general public, we will follow state and federal guidance in providing priority distribution to those in vulnerable populations, including elderly persons and people with significant underlying medical conditions. Once we have addressed vulnerable populations, we will begin the process of vaccinating the general public in accordance with state and federal guidance.
Story Medical Clinics are not currently scheduling appointments or compiling a waiting list for the COVID-19 vaccine.
Again, we understand there is great interest about when and how the vaccine will be available and administered to the general public. This is a complex and sometimes frustrating process, and we appreciate your patience.
As we prepare for delivery of the vaccine, it is essential for everyone to continue to wear a mask, practice physical distancing and wash hands regularly.
In this hopeful time, we remain proud and humbled to serve our communities. We will get through this together!
