Position Description

The Director of Nursing  provides overall leadership and directs nursing practice within areas of responsibility, abiding by the parameters of the Nurse Practice Act and Story County Medical Center Senior Care's policies and procedures. The Director of Nursing advises the Administrator and/or Chief Nursing Officer of potential or real problems in a timely manner and recommends solutions as appropriate. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Responsible for Senior Care's nursing participation and performance in Department of Inspection and Appeals and/or DNV certification and inspection processes
  • Exercise supervision over the residents of Story County Medical Center Senior Care, with an emphasis on care, comfort, and safety. Assures resident safety at all times
  • Responsible for Story County Medical Center Senior Care policies and procedures as well as compliance with all regulatory agency requirements
  • Responsible for the hiring, mentoring, coaching, termination, and disciplinary actions of Story County Medical Center Senior Care nursing staff
  • Responsible for the preparation and management of departmental position meetings (i.e: supervisory staff meetings, monthly nursing meetings, etc.)
  • Monitor Story County Medical Center Senior Care's culture so that it supports S.T.O.R.Y. Values and promotes employee satisfaction
  • Maintain effective communication with Senior Care staff and all other Story County Medical Center departments in order to communicate with other members of the health care team to ensure continuity of care and coordination of services
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding all resident, patient, personnel information, and all other Senior Care information
  • Function as a role model, demonstrating competency in professional judgement
  • Demonstrate good public relations
  • Participate in department head meetings, leadership huddles, staff meetings, and attends other meetings and events as they relate to Story County Medical Center Senior Care function(s)
  • Effectively handles multiple projects and special assignments and other duties as assigned

Position Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited and approved nursing program
  • Current Iowa nursing license
  • Previous supervisory experience as the ADON or DON in a senior care setting required
  • Demonstrated leadership and management ability required
  • Previous experience with infection control, quality assurance, MDS, and Point Click care strongly preferred
  • Clinical experience in geriatric nursing
  • BCLS certified within 60 days of employment
  • Mandatory Reporter required within 90 days of employment
  • Knowledge of nursing practice act and standards of care
  • Ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships and public relations
