NEVADA, IOWA – With the aim of ensuring the state’s junior high and high schoolers are healthy enough to hit the field (or court, pool, course, etc.), the state requires sports physicals to be completed before athletes are cleared for competition on school-affiliated teams.
Story Medical is proactive in promoting these sports physicals, and is partnering with 21st Century Rehab to offer them free from 3 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19 and Tuesday, August 17. The free sports physicals will be offered at Nevada High School and are open to all school-aged athletes.
In addition to staff from 21st Century Rehab, Story Medical Clinic providers Art Check, MD; Shane Higgins, PA-C; Mary Carr Peterson, PA-C; and Rachel Frederick, PA-C; will be on hand. In addition to a physical, athletes will be receive free ACL stability testing.
No appointment is necessary and the sports physical form required by the state’s athletic associations will be completed for each athlete.
To compete on a school-sponsored team, this form must be completed each year. It was developed with the assistance of the Committee on Sports Medicine of the Iowa Medical Society and has been approved for use by the Iowa Department of Education, Iowa High School Athletic Association, and Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.
The form must be completed and signed by a licensed physician, osteopathic physician, osteopath, advanced registered nurse practitioner (ARNP), physician assistant or qualified doctor of chiropractic, stating the student-athlete may safely engage in athletic competition.
