Finding Your Flow: Yoga at Story Medical

In July, Story Medical offered a free yoga session in Harrington Park. Aimed at introducing the community to our yoga offering, we had more than a dozen community membersĀ—representing a wide range of ages—roll out their mats and participate in a session led by Story Medical yoga instructor Barbara Gerlach. The level of participation showed that there was a demand for the practice in Nevada.

Barbara, who has been teaching yoga classes for more than a decade and recently became a YogaFit Certified Instructor, leads classes on our South Campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:15 p.m. She has led the offering at Story Medical since June and says the practice of yoga offers an array of benefits.

"Yoga lets you do what you love, longer," Barbara says. "If you love to play basketball, adding yoga will allow you to continue to play until you're 50 or 60 years old instead of having to give it up at 40. The same with golf or cycling or running or just about any other activity you enjoy."

It was running that encouraged Barbara to give yoga a try back in the early 2000s. A runner from an early age, as she got older she experienced more nagging pains. She knew if she was going to continue to run, she would have to do something to help her gain flexibility and strength.

"I am a prime example of what I preach," Barbara says. "As I got older my knees really began to bother me and I needed something to help me stay well."

In addition to providing a number of physical benefitsĀ—almost 20 years later, Barbara is still a regular runner—she found something else in her yoga practice.

"Yoga is about more than just the movements," Barbara says. "It helps to alleviate stress, and who can't use that? It is a philosophy for your lifestyle. It can help all of us to achieve a richer life."

Barbara says this applies to everyone, no matter where they are on their wellness journey.

"If you know how to stand and how to bend over, you can do yoga," she says. "It is not the pretzel twisting movements that so many think it is. It is an individual practice and I am there to guide you as you build strength and balance, calm your mind and calm your body."
