Meagan Ausborn-Henderson, RN, Joins Story Medical Clinic as Its First Health Coach

Story Medical Clinic is proud to announce the hire of its first health coach, Meagan Ausborn-Henderson, RN. Ausborn-Henderson is certified through the Iowa Board of Nursing as a registered nurse and has had specialized training in health coaching to become a Physician Office Health Coach.

Ausborn-Henderson was born and raised in Story County. She lives in Gilbert with her husband and two girls and says she has a passion for promoting wellness and providing personalized care. She has over eight years of healthcare experience and was previously a physical therapy assistant at another critical access hospital in Iowa.

“I became a nurse because I genuinely care for the patients I serve. The best part of being an R.N./Health Coach is the fact that I have the resources to sit down and spend the time with patients that they so desperately deserve.” says Ausborn-Henderson. “As the old cliché’ goes, ‘If you do what you love you will never work a day in your life.’ I am so lucky to have found my calling.”

To ensure patients have the support and motivation to get the most out of life, Story Medical Clinic began offering the services of a health coach last fall. The clinic is the first in Story County to offer this service. Health coaching is provided at no charge to patients dealing with conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol or blood pressure or severe food allergies. All patients are referred to Ausborn-Henderson by a Story Medical Clinic provider.

In addition to providing motivation, support and goal-setting advice for Story Medical Clinic patients, Ausborn-Henderson also performs pre-visit chart reviews to ensure the best possible care is given at a patient’s appointment. She does follow-up phone calls and keeps a registry of patients with chronic conditions to help identify trends. Her data collection will help to establish best practices in caring for patients in the future.

“This is an innovative position,” said Ausborn-Henderson. “My focus is on caring for each patient holistically. That means helping them to set goals and take steps toward managing their condition and any life factors that are impacting that condition.”

“By hiring a health coach, Story Medical is helping to move health care in a proactive direction,” said Todd Willert, Story Medical Administrator. “Mercy Clinic in Des Moines has been a model of success for us. They are leading the nation when it comes to health coaching, and we have been able to implement a program similar to there’s that will likely become a norm for all clinics in the future.”
