Story Medical Donates Wheelchairs

All around the globe there are millions of people with disabilities that dream of a life that includes the simple joy of mobility.  Paving the front for this cause is Joni and Friends: Wheels for the World, an international organization that provides people with wheelchairs.  Story County Medical Center recently donated up to a dozen wheelchairs, a few folding walkers and wheelchair accessories to this international organization.

“Story County Medical Center thought this would be a great opportunity to give to this good cause,” said Julie Schreitmueller, chief operating and compliance officer.

All of the wheelchairs will be restored to mint condition and even fitted to each recipient.  In addition, the recipients of the wheelchairs will be provided with training and upkeep for their wheel chairs.

Joni and Friends: Wheels for the World has been taking used but restorable wheelchairs in communities all throughout the United States and shipping them all over the world.  To countries like China, Cuba, Romania, Ghana, Thailand, and India.

About Joni and Friends: Wheels for the World

In 1967, Joni Eareckson Tada was injured in a diving accident at 17 years old, leaving her in a quadriplegic state with minimal use of her hands. After the accident, Joni decided to become an author and wrote numerous books all relating to her struggle.

In 1979, Joni and Friends began at Joni’s house as she and her friends responded to the many questions and needs pouring in from families affected by disability who read Joni’s books or had seen the movie of her life. From the beginning, Joni, her staff, and volunteers devoted their energies to developing Christ-centered programs and services which would help meet the spiritual and practical needs of disabled people and their families, including Family Retreats, the distribution of wheelchairs and Bibles worldwide to people affected by disability, and church training at local and national disability ministry conferences. Joni and Friends continues to reach out around the world to people and families affected by disability with the love of Christ and the practical help they need.
